Solace through Brotherhood

In the depiction, Kien and his younger sibling Jimmy are looking upon the raindrops at night to illustrate how they both support one another through the encounter experiences they traverse. The raindrop scenery the brothers gaze on serves as a temporary means to escape their troubled realities, and as a reflection tool to find solace through their memories. Although their situations look bleak in many of their confrontations, the brothers have each other, helping them get through their challenges. The picture also depicts a moment were the brothers bond strengthens as the moment will become a shared memory for them.

  1. After Lam's despicable actions, Kien wakes Jimmy, takes him outside, and they sleep in the rain. The rain did not directly touch them. The buildings scaffold kept them dry. Khuon yells at the children because Jimmy looks sick from sleeping outside. Even when he can sleep inside, Kien does not feel comfortable. He would rather endure cold and rain than sleep near Lam. Kien "recalled Lam's threats: 'Hey, Kien,' his voice echoed, 'I will go after your brother next. I will go after your brother next. I will go after...'" (133). Kien protects him by sleeping in the rain and sharing, like Nelson mentions, a memory. The rain never touches them, and Lam will never reach Jimmy.

  3. I really like your choice of image and your discussion of the importance of both brothers having each other. While Kien was attempting to protect Jimmy from Lam, Jimmy's physical presence was also providing a comfort to Kien. Though the brothers may have been scolded at the next morning, Kien may have saved Jimmy from a similar fate with Lam.

  4. I really like your illustration. It captivates the essence of Kien and Jimmy's brother relationship. I think Jimmy played a pivotal role in Kien's life since he had someone to share every experience, good or bad (mostly bad). Even though Jimmy is younger than Kien, he observed and understood everything that was occurring. In my perspective, I feel that Jimmy was a strong source of support for Kien. They both faced everything together and suffered in the same way. Without Jimmy it is certain that Kien would have felt alone. Kien protects Jimmy from harm, especially when Lam violates Kien. As an older brother, he makes it his priority to protect his younger brother.
